The projects that AGA members are carrying
out have the goal to contribute to the conservation of the most
threatened feline in the Americas and one of the least known
worldwide.
Our
ambition is to promote the Andean cat as a “flagship species” to
promote the conservation of the Andean mountain ecosystems where
the species inhabits and to play an important role in the improvement
of life quality of local communities.
For this reason, fundamental components for achieving our goal are research,
environmental education and support to the management of wild areas. Since 1998,
when we began research projects, mainly to know the geographical distribution
of the Andean cat, thanks to the support of donors and institutional support
al the local level, we accomplished significant results that allowed us to enhance
our knowledge on the distribution of the Andean cat and on some aspects of its
ecology, as well as, to develop projects on environmental education and community
participation.
Still, there are left many places to explore, themes to investigate
and work to do with the local communities, which will allow us
to develop and to strengthen existing projects and conservation
plans. We need your support to be able to continue with these
tasks and achieve our goal step by step:
To assure the long-term survival of the Andean cat by ensuring
the existence of viable populations and the integrity of natural
habitats, which is also the habitat of thousands of Andean
communities that live in those remote areas.
