Argentina

Project 1: First estimate of population numbers in sympatric Andean cat and pampas cat.
Objectives: This project aims to provide the first count of individuals in a population of Andean cats and to provide a technical tool to estimate the population status of the high Andes small cats over large regions. We will combine three methods: camera trapping, sign counts through transect lines and fecal DNA analysis to identify species and individuals.

Project 2: Building capacity for monitoring and conservation of Andean cats and other carnivores in management agencies
Objectives: Increase knowledge of the AC distribution and status in the southernmost portion of its range while training protected area personnel in carnivore ecology, monitoring and conservation planning to initiate a network of monitors in the Andean steppe.

Project 3: Increasing community participation in long-term conservation of the Andean cat in Argentina, through the development of a network of local community educators.
Objectives: Involve local communities in the conservation of the Andean cat in Argentina through a change in their attitude, a growth in their ecological understanding and the search for sustainable, conservation-friendly uses of local resources.

Project 4: Create a community-based carnivore monitoring programme
Objectives: To implement a novel strategy that will increase both our knowledge on the Andean carnivore guild and community involvement in conservation of the Andean Cat.

Bolivia

Project 1: Knowing the Andean Cat and its habitat in Bolivia
Objectives: To contribute to the conservation of the Andean cat, by implementing a Program of Environmental Education in Bolivia, oriented to increase the knowledge of the local communities about the Andean cat and its habitat and  stimulate their critical thought on environmental themes

Project 2: Strengthening the capacities of park guards from Bolivian Protected Areas to promote the conservation of the Andean cat and its habitat.
Objectives: To generate interest in park guards and to strengthen their capacities to carry out research projects by their own initiative, that contribute to the conservation of the Andean cat and its habitat.

Chile

Project 1: Promote community participation and education to reduce impact of human activities in Andean cat population and ecosystem.
Objectives: To continue developing educational activities with children in rural schools of the pre Andean and Andean areas within Regions I and II.

Project 2: Determine the current distribution and increase understanding of the ecology of the Andean cat in Chile.
Objectives: Determine whether the Andean cat inhabits more southern geographic ranges (Regions II to V and MR). Determine habitat use of the Andean cat in Chile and determine the presence, relative abundance and availability of prey in specific sites.

Project 3: Promote the creation of the Licancabur-Tatio protected area in the high Andean zone of Region II.
Objectives: Strengthen the protected areas actions and improve its management. Promote the creation of new protected areas inside units of SNASPE (National System of Protected Areas and/or corridors). Foment the development of conservation initiatives and actions in both regions.

Perú

Project 1: Participation and Environmental Education for the Conservation of the Andean Cat (Oreailurus jacobita) in Tacna and Puno - Peru.
Objectives: To strengthen the environmental education campaign implemented in 2006 in educational centers and to include new educational centers, with the participation of family parents and trained teachers; to sensitize on the conservation of the Andean Cat and other main wildlife species in the Andean zone of Tacna and Puno Departments.

Project 2: Community Participation in the Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve (RPNYC): Towards a strategy for the conservation of the Andean cat (Oreailurus jacobita).
Objectives: To contribute to the knowledge on the Andean cat and its importance in the Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve, by promoting community participation of the local population and elaborating conservation strategies.

Project 3: Study of the distribution and conservation status of the Andean cat (Oreailurus jacobita) in the Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve (RPNYC).
Objectives: To continue the studies of present distribution of the Andean cat in the RPNYC and to contribute in the new zoning of the Reserve to improve the conditions of habitat protection.

Project 4: Conservation plan for the Andean cat and other endangered species with importance in the Vilacota Maure ACR - Tacna, Peru
Objectives: To elaborate a conservation plan for the Andean cat and other endangered species of importance in Vilacota Maure Regional Area of Conservation.

Project 5: Training Program for local authorities on the conservation of the Andean cat (Oreailurus jacobita) and other endangered Andean species of the Provinces of Tacna and Tarata, Tacna - Peru.
Objectives: To increase the capacities of technical and specialized personnel of governmental institutions linked to the protection of the environment and conservation of endangered species as the Andean cat.

Multi-national Projects

Argentina – Bolivia – Chile
Project: Using detecting dogs to monitor Andean cats
Objectives: To train and deploy a detection dog team to survey Andean cat populations in adjacent areas of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile (triple frontier).
Project personnel: Pablo Perovic (Responsible); Erica Cuykens, Analia Saldisuri, David Llampa.
Location: Current fine-tuning of technique restricted to Vilama in Argentina, with plans to survey adjacent areas in Bolivia (Eduardo Avaroa National Fauna Reserve) and Chile (Tara and Tatio).

Argentina – Bolivia – Chile
Project: Impact and mitigation of off-road tourism on High Andes habitats of the Triple Frontier (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile).
Objectives: To evaluate and to mitigate the impact of 4x4 traffic in protected areas around the triple frontier of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. To promote a responsible tourism among the tourist operators of the sector, local communities, public in general and personnel of the protected areas, and simultaneously to contribute to the design of well defined and unique roads within the protected zones.

Project: Population genetics of the Andean cat and the pampas cat
Objectives: To describe the genetic structure of the Andean cat and pampas cat populations in all its distribution range.

Location: Localities of the high Andean and Puna region of Peru, Argentina, Bolivia and Chile.

Project: Conservation of Puna´s Andean cats across national borders
Objectives: To facilitate long-term protection of the vertebrate biodiversity of the Central Andes Puna across national frontiers, through establishment of the Andean cat as a conservation flagship, local community participation and protected area staff training.
